Does my hard drive need to be encrypted?

It very much depends on the information that you hold on it and the risk of it being compromised. Clearly a laptop which you carry around with you and has the personal data of your clients on it is more vulnerable to opportunistic theft than a hard drive that is kept in a secure environment such as an office. It really does come down to effective risk assessments that are fit for purpose.
